Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui Episode 2 Review

Let's join the whimsical wiles of unpopular high schooler Tomoki Kuroki as she tries to get popular--

Kuroki after Fifty Shades of Grey

Ooooh... yeah, that's gonna be the premise of this episode.

So the episode begins with... what seems to be Kuroki listening to a drama audio track... not sure what to make of this but apparently she likes it.

Hey I mean if I listened to my favorite audio drama CD and did this, I'd be sent to the mental institute... or prison, or both.
Until she gets a call from her old friend, Yuu Naruse, who asked Kuroki whether she was free on Saturday and whether she would like to hang out. (Geez, I must be more unpopular than Kuroki. I never get called out to go out on a Saturday) She then realizes, she has to talk about her high school life to her... and we ALL know what happened in episode 1.

And so the theme song begins, still the most epic theme song I've heard, the episode starts proper.

The fact that Kuroki actually had a friend blew my mind.
So the episode starts out with Kuroki eating a hearty breakfast of over 7 bowls of rice and dashing off to school in a hopes to find interesting things to say about her high school life within the week she has to see Naruse.

One problem.

NEVER. RUN. ON A FULL STOMACH.
Or else this happens.
And yes, it's happened to me once. ONCE. Not a good feeling when it happens.

So the moment she gets to school, she tries to find some things that she can tell Naruse about when she meets her. One of which is where she fantasizes about being one of those ditzes who eats during class.

I can relate.
This being Kuroki, it doesn't happen. All it does is the fact that people notice there's a food smell in the area.

Art period, Kuroki finds out about the class trip that the 2nd years are taking and over-analyzes her school trip next year.

She flips out. As usual.

Why am I not friends with this girl again?
AND THEN she finds out that the art class she's going to is a partnered class. She flips out again.

That feeling when you're the only one left when everyone else is partnered. I've felt that.
And so she decides to skip it, call in sick and miss art class. In the nurse's room however... she finds that she's sleeping right next to a boy on another bed, and she decides that's one thing to brag about to Naruse.

Yes you are, Kuroki, yes you are.
One sick bay, fantasizing about the baseball team manager and a random couple on a bridge later, we cut to a break and move on to the next day in Kuroki's high school life. It's Friday and she looks through the things that she can talk about with Naruse the next day.

That's... a rather bizarre thing to tell one of your best friends.
The next part of this, I didn't take a single screenshot because it's borderline hentai and I'm trying to keep this episodic blog review as PG as possible. Basically, she fantasizes about men taking her virginity and how painful it would be. Later, she gets called by the art teacher with the guy she fell asleep with that she has to complete the art portrait by that day.

Yeah, I'll totally trust this guy.
Of course, Kuroki ends up not liking the guy because he does sound like a pretentious bastard, but once again manages to flub everything by fantasizing about how she's going to get alone with him and if it happens, whether they'll get a 'route' together.

Oh if only life were THAT easy.
That fantasy turns out to be disgusting to her. Yeah.

Cut straight to the art room after school where Kuroki and that guy has to finish a painting together.

NOPE, NOT CREEPY AT ALL.
Turns out, he's really good and has finished his portrait all quick-like. Kuroki thinks he's half-assing his portrait and decides to do the same.

Rare footage of Kuroki actually calm.
It turns out, the guy wasn't half-assing his portrait. It turns our really good and Kuroki decides to photocopy the portrait. She decides, since he's awkward like she is, that maybe she could be friends with this guy.

Cut straight to the day she's finally going to meet Naruse... and boy DID SHE CHANGE.

So uh, how did she go from bespectacled nerd to total bombshell in the span of a year in high school?

But anyways, the rest of the episode is about her having fun with Naruse as they reminisce about the good old days of being with her in middle school.

At the end, Yuu opens up to her about her high school life, Kuroki does the same and realizes how much of a best friend Yuu actually is to her.

Actual review:

The episode was pretty good. It was nice to have a less depressing and mentally ill Kuroki in the episode and it made her a hell lot more likeable. Although I didn't like that other guy in the art class and the fact there was that one semi-hentai scene, the episode did teach people that your friends may have left and changed on the outside, but it doesn't mean they've changed on the inside. I applaud this message a lot.
